In the United States, PEB building systems hold a significant market share, especially in non-residential low-rise buildings. According to 2024 data from the Metal Building Associations, PEBs account for over 60% of such structures.16 Economic developments, particularly in the western and southern states, have significantly contributed to the growth of this market.17 In Canada, PEBs are increasingly preferred for mini-storage facilities, industrial buildings, and commercial buildings due to their durability, cost-effectiveness, and design flexibility.7 This widespread use in North America indicates that PEBs have become an established solution in the construction industry.

Asia Pacific: As of 2024, the Asia Pacific region is the largest user of PEB building systems, with a market share of 38.71%.16 Rapid non-residential construction and infrastructure development activities in the region form the basis of this growth. Additionally, low labor costs and supportive government regulations encouraging foreign investors to establish factories and distribution centers in developing countries in the Asia Pacific have significantly contributed to the growth of the PEB market.16 China and India account for a large portion of the PEB demand in the region due to their increasing populations, economic growth rates, and government infrastructure investments.16 In India, PEB systems are used in 70% of single-story non-residential buildings.23 The annual growth rate of the PEB market in the country is estimated to be between 25% and 30%.16 In Southeast Asia, rapid urbanization and industrialization in countries like Vietnam are continuously increasing the demand for PEB building systems.24 These systems offer cost-effective and fast construction solutions, especially for warehouses, factories, and other commercial buildings.15 The use of PEB systems is also becoming increasingly common in various applications in Australia. This dynamic market in the Asia Pacific clearly demonstrates the importance of PEBs in the global construction sector.

Europe: The PEB market in Europe has significant growth potential, especially due to stringent regulations promoting sustainability and energy efficiency.17 Germany is one of the leading countries in this field, with strong government support for sustainable construction practices.17 In the UK, the current housing shortage has revived interest in prefabricated construction methods, and PEB systems are gaining attention in this context.33 The Eurocode standards, widely used in the design of steel structures across Europe, also allow for the safe and efficient application of PEB systems.34 Europe's sustainability-focused policies and increasing housing needs are making PEB building systems an important market for this region.

Middle East: In the Middle East region, particularly in countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, rapid infrastructure development and industrialization activities are significantly increasing interest in PEB building systems.9 Large-scale projects and ongoing economic growth in this region strongly support the demand for PEB systems. PEBs have significant growth potential, especially for infrastructure projects, industrial facilities, and commercial buildings.

Turkey: In Turkey, PEB building systems are becoming increasingly popular for various applications, particularly industrial structures, warehouses, and commercial buildings.95 These systems offer advantages such as rapid installation, cost-effectiveness, and design flexibility.95 Additionally, the fact that up to 90% of the materials used in PEB systems can be recycled makes these structures an environmentally friendly option.95 Investors in Turkey are turning to PEB systems to meet increasing demand, save time, and achieve economical solutions.97 Considering earthquake regulations, the lightweight structure of PEB systems also provides an advantage against seismic loads.95

Other Developing Markets: The use of PEB building systems is also increasing in other developing markets such as Africa and Latin America.16 The significant need for fast and affordable construction solutions in these markets plays an important role in the preference for PEBs. As infrastructure and industrial needs in these regions are met, significant opportunities arise for the future growth of PEB technology.

Main Codes and Regulations Applicable to PEB Building Systems

The design, manufacture, and assembly of PEB building systems are subject to various codes and regulations in different countries and regions. These codes regulate structural safety, fire safety, energy efficiency, and other important aspects. Some of the main applicable codes and regulations in major countries are summarized below:

United States: In the US, PEBs are primarily designed and constructed according to established standards such as the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) standards and the International Building Code (IBC). AISC standards are the basic references for the design, manufacture, and assembly of steel structures.48 In particular, the AISC 360 specification is a widely used standard for the design of steel buildings.102 The IBC, on the other hand, is a model building code adopted by many US states and municipalities, covering various aspects such as fire safety, structural adequacy, and accessibility.104 Additionally, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards provide specifications and test methods for different types of materials used in structural steel.101 ASTM A36 and ASTM A992 are important standards commonly used for structural carbon steel.101

Canada: In Canada, PEBs are constructed within the framework of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards and the National Building Code of Canada (NBC). CSA offers various standards for the design and manufacture of steel structures.111 In particular, the CSA A660 standard is an important requirement for the certification of steel building systems manufacturers.111 The CSA S16 standard covers the limit states design of steel structures.112 The National Building Code of Canada (NBC) is a national standard that all new buildings across the country must comply with, regulating structural safety, fire safety, and other important aspects.117

India: In India, PEBs are designed and constructed according to local standards such as IS 800 and the National Building Code of India (NBC). IS 800 is a code of practice for general construction in steel.119 Its latest revision was in 2007 and is based on the limit state design methodology.121 IS 801 provides guidance for the design of cold-formed light gauge steel structural members 119, while the IS 875 standard defines the application principles for various design loads on buildings.119 The National Building Code of India (NBC) is a comprehensive document aimed at unifying building regulations across the country.124 SP 7 (2005) compiles information from different parts of the NBC.124

Europe: In Europe, PEBs are largely designed and constructed in accordance with Eurocode 3 (EN 1993) standards.34 Based on the principles of limit state design, Eurocode 3 provides comprehensive rules and guidelines to ensure that steel buildings and other engineering structures are safe and functional.35 This standard covers a wide range of design requirements, from material properties to structural analysis, section resistance, and buckling resistance.

Southeast Asia: Codes and regulations applicable to PEB building systems in Southeast Asia vary from country to country. For example, in Vietnam, there are national standards such as TCVN 2737:2020 (Loads and Actions) and TCVN 5574:2012 (Steel Structures - Design Standard).103 In the Philippines, standards like NSCP (National Structural Code of the Philippines) and PNS 49 (Philippine National Standard for Steel Structures) are in effect.105 In Singapore, SS EN 1993 (Singapore version of Eurocode 3) and SS EN 1994 (Singapore version of Eurocode 4 for Composite Steel and Concrete Structures) standards are applied for steel structures.135 Malaysia is in the process of incorporating Eurocodes into its national standards (MS EN).139 In Thailand, design codes developed by EIT (Engineering Institute of Thailand) are used.149 In Indonesia, national standards known as SNI (Standar Nasional Indonesia) are in effect.151 International standards such as Eurocode and AISC can also be referenced in some projects in the region.101

Middle East: Codes applicable to PEB building systems in the Middle East also vary by country. In the UAE, different emirate-based codes are applied, such as the Dubai Building Code in Dubai 46 and the Abu Dhabi International Building Code in Abu Dhabi.66 In Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Building Code (SBC) is in effect 53, and this code is based on AISC standards.56 In Qatar, the Qatar National Construction Standards (QCS) are applied.70 Oman is developing its first national building code, the Oman Building Code.84 In Kuwait, the building codes used may not be up-to-date, and American and British standards are generally referenced.77 International standards such as IBC, Eurocode 3, and AISC are also widely used in the region.48

Turkey: In Turkey, the design and construction of steel structures are subject to national regulations such as the "Regulation on the Principles of Design, Calculation and Construction of Steel Structures" 164 and the "Turkey Building Earthquake Code (TBDY)".168 While the Steel Structures Regulation regulates the design and construction principles of structural steel and steel-concrete composite structural elements 164, TBDY specifies the earthquake-resistant design principles for buildings to be constructed in earthquake zones.168 These regulations refer to various standards and codes to ensure structural safety and performance.100 Additionally, standards published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), such as TS 498 (Calculation Values of Loads to be Taken for Dimensioning Building Elements) and TS 648 (Rules for Calculation and Construction of Steel Structures), also play an important role in the design process.173
